It DID sound great, those lowly vlz's - but it was the ace behind the rec/mixdown that made this happen (not the vlz's nor the flase high-end pre mirror). blah-blah-blah", commenting on the gear/pres, holding them to the pedestal their prices designate it. Days later during mixdown, the band is ooing and ahhing the "phatness, etc. He had all his expensive pre's on, etc.but really ONLY usd his lil 1604 vlz pres for the actual recording. If you're not getting good sound at all with yer vlz's - I would tend to blame the person at the control - not the pre.įunny lil session: I was hanging with my buddy who was recording a group one night on a whim (freebie after hours). Just having an expensive pre here or there IS NOT going to overplay: Proper mic placement, good-great mics, a good room, great instruments and musicians on them, time and care with recording/mixdown, proper knowledge/use of plugins/outboard gear, proper experience/knowledge with a mixdown WITH THE TYPE OF MUSIC BEING RECORDED. I've seen many a GREAT session come out of JUST simple vlz pres. 90% of your final sound is coming from TIME and CARE during the rec and mixdown phase. Mackie vlz eh? Well here's another lil reality. ![]() Dealbreaker for some?.eh, maybe.Ī quality tube pre is worthwhile, but I don't subscribe to those who believe they're the only thing any more. ![]() Budget means they cut where things can be cut - and the notch switching is an example. I don't dig the notch gain knobs, but that's about it. I've used the RNP in many situations, you'll be pleasantly surprised.
